The scientific name is Pagrus Auratus (Linnaeus, 1758) and belongs to the family of Sparidae. It ranks among the so-called "red" fish such as the dentex and the red snapper. Its length can reach 90 cm and weight of 8-9 kg.
It is a demersal species, i.e. living near the seabed in open waters and in different types of bottom (rocky, sandy or posidonia meadows) at depths ranging from 30 to 250 m. and often below 150 m. depth.
It is an omnivorous species that feeds primarily on benthic crustaceans, fish and mollusks. Consumed fresh or frozen and is considered one of the most exquisite fish. Unfortunately, it belongs to endangered species and is contained in the Red Book of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature & natural resources).
